    Metro breaks ground on new Crystal City station entrance in Arlington

    ARLINGTON, Va. ( DC News Now ) — It’s official! Construction is underway to bring the new Crystal City Metro entrance in Arlington County to life.

    The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) announced Friday that Metro, Arlington County, and other local and state officials held a groundbreaking ceremony, marking the start of the three-year-long project.

    WMATA said the estimated $146 million entrance will sit at 18th Street and Crystal Drive. It will feature an above-ground entrance with fare gates, fare vending machines, two elevators, and a set of stairs that will take riders from a new mezzanine to the train platforms.

    In a news release, officials said the news Crystal City entrance will help meet demands as Amazon and other businesses continue growing.

    “Crystal City is one of our busiest stations in Virginia with over 5,500 average daily entries,” said General Manager and Chief Executive Officer Randy Clarke. “This new station entrance will be an asset to our system and is a great example of the way Metro and the region are working together to grow our economy and connect people to transit.”

    WMATA said the entrance is set to open in late 2027.
