Six commissioned public art pieces were unveiled at the Clippers’ new home arena in Inglewood, the Intuit Dome, on Friday.

KNX News’ Nataly Tavidian spoke to the six L.A. artists about their inspiration for their artwork.

One piece, created by Michael Massenburg, is a 25 ft. by 100 ft. porcelain enamel mural on street panels installed on the wall outside the dome on Prairie Ave.  The piece shows athletes, musicians, and dancers and expresses the artist’s beliefs that two things that unite people are sports and art.

Another piece, crafted by Patrick Martinez, is titled “Same Boat” and uses a neon sign to display a quote about shared humanity by late civil rights leader Whitney Young: “We may all have come on different ships, but we are in the same boat now.”.

“I wanted to populate spaces with messages that, you know, re-energize people's messages from the past,” Martinez explained.

“It's a moving message of collective responsibility and the power of teamwork,” art consultant Ruth Berson added.

The six artists were chosen through conversations with curators, historians, and a panel of jury members.

“It wasn't a competition that we were running. It was an invitation that we were offering,” Berson said.

The Intuit Dome is scheduled to open next month.
