Budweiser Clydesdales arrive in North Texas for All-Star Game

The Budweiser Clydesdales joined the Fort Worth Herd in the Stockyards Friday as they prepare for the All-Star Game in Arlington next week. Budweiser says it is Major League Baseball's longest sponsor.

"We stand very proud with that," says Handler Alec Smith. "One of the best ways we can celebrate is with our very large, iconic, clydesdales."

Smith says the clydesdales are bred for the job.

"Every single horse has its perfect four white legs, that matching coat, black mane, black tail and black foretop, which is the hair right over their eyes," he says.

Each horse weighs about one ton and measures about 18 hands high, which is about six feet. The biggest horses are kept in back and control the direction of the wagon. The smaller horses are more agile, quickest to turn and kept in front.

Some people came to the Stockyards early to see the Clydesdales setting up.

"I've been enjoying their product a long time, so I support them," one man said.

Another brought his kids and said they had seen the Clydesdales on TV commercials for years.

"It's not very often you get to see them up close," he said. "To actually see them in person, it's outstanding, just the size of them."

"They're humongous," his son said.

The clydesdales followed the Fort Worth Herd on its cattle drive Friday. They will make appearances around North Texas leading up to the All-Star Game Tuesday.

The Major League Baseball draft will be held at Cowtown Coliseum in the Stockyards Sunday through Tuesday.
