In a recent personal essay for the New York Times, former Vibe editor-in-chief Danyel Smith revealed that Sean “ Diddy ” Combs allegedly made threats against her life following a disagreement over a magazine cover in 1997.

n her recent essay published on Friday, Danyel Smith detailed her experiences with Sean “Diddy” Combs, the hip-hop mogul who has faced allegations of sexual assault and was captured on a 2016 surveillance tape physically assaulting his then-girlfriend, Cassie Ventura. Smith recounted an incident from 1997 where Combs insisted on having dual covers of Vibe magazine portraying him as both an angel and a devil. When Smith refused to comply with his demand, Combs allegedly threatened her by saying he would find her “dead in the trunk of a car.” Despite her request for him to retract his statement, Combs reportedly swore at her and claimed to know her exact whereabouts at that moment.

Smith refused to comply with Combs’ request to see the dual covers, and the servers storing the final version of the magazine were stolen from the office before it was supposed to be printed. However, an art director had a backup copy of the issue saved on a CD, which enabled the magazine to be released on time despite the theft.

Smith also recounted a disturbing incident where she and some female friends were having drinks with Combs’ wife, Kim Porter, when the rapper abruptly entered and insisted that Porter return home right away. He then proceeded to empty the contents of Porter’s purse onto the table.

“He snatched up her bank cards to the beat of: You ain’t got. No business. In here. You need. To be. At home. With. Those. Kids. Combs yelled something like, ‘Get home as best you can.’ From the sidewalk, I saw Porter being hustled into the limo in which we arrived. One of the friends, more tired than terrified, shot me a look: You good? And they were gone,” Smith wrote.

At another event hosted by Epic Records, Smith remembered a moment when Cassie Ventura, also known as Cassie, was unexpectedly by herself and approached her to ask how she was feeling. Smith had a feeling that the singer was about to confide something significant to her.

“We each wanted to say something. It seemed that neither of us could find the words,” Smith said.
