    Rhode Island’s AI Task Force to hold first meeting on Monday

    PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — Gov. Dan McKee will host the state’s inaugural Artificial Intelligence Task Force meeting on Monday, July 15.

    McKee signed an executive order in February to create the task force, which will analyze and provide information on “the risks and opportunities presented by the advancement of AI.”

    “Embracing AI and finding safe methods and practices for it in our government and economy is crucial for our state’s future,” McKee said in a press release on Friday. “With this task force and other efforts underway, Rhode Island is poised to better the lives of Rhode Islanders and help chart a new course for the innovation technology landscape.”

    The 24-member task force is led by former Congressman Jim Langevin, who also chairs Rhode Island College’s I nstitute for Cybersecurity and Emerging Technologies .

    Chris Parisi, president of Trailblaze Marketing, will serve as vice-chair.

    These are the remaining 22 members of the task force:

    • Jonathan Womer, Department of Administration director
    • Matthew Weldon, Department of Labor & Training director
    • RI Commerce Secretary Liz Tanner
    • Richard Charest, Executive Office of Health and Human Services secretary
    • Brian Tardiff, chief digital officer
    • Marc Pappas, Emergency Management Agency director
    • Elizabeth Kelleher Dwyer, Department of Business Regulation director
    • RI Education Commissioner Angélica Infante-Green
    • Dr. Shannon Gilkey, commissioner at the Office of the Postsecondary Commissioner
    • Francis Doyle III Brown University’s provost
    • State Sen. Louis DiPalma
    • State Rep. Jacquelyn Baginski
    • North Providence Mayor Charles Lombardi
    • Michael Sabitoni, organized labor representative
    • Christopher Horvath, Citizens Bank, financing/banking sector
    • Kenneth Jeanos, General Dynamics Electric Boat, defense sector
    • John Hazen White, Jr., Taco Comfort, manufacturing sector
    • Dr. Michael Wagner, Care New England, healthcare sector
    • Edmund Shallcross III, Amica CEO
    • Nina Pande, Skills for RI, workforce development sector
    • Addison Heffernan, Bishop Hendricken, student representative
    • Oscar Mejias, Rhode Island Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, nonprofit sector

    “The diverse perspectives of the task force members will allow us to create a comprehensive roadmap that will prepare Rhode Island to implement artificial intelligence effectively and ethically,” Langevin said. “Our work will realize Governor McKee’s vision to best position the Ocean State to maximize the benefits of AI, while minimizing the downsides.”

    The meeting will be held at the Department of Administration at 3 p.m.
