2024 marks the 40th anniversary of the first Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comic. Unsurprisingly, IDW Publishing is celebrating that milestone with a new series and a fresh start for the turtle teens. What is surprising, however, is how that fresh start begins.

Written by Jason Aaron , with art by Joëlle Jones , Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #1 opens in San Quentin Prison. It is here that Raphael is held on undefined charges. Despite this, the most temperamental of the TMNT is thriving, given his violent streak allows him to fit in among the worst of the worst.

It is not explained how this came to be, or what happened to his brothers. All we know is that it has been months since Raph has seen his family and things “broke down between us.” However, circumstances soon find him planning a prison break, for the sake of his brothers.

Jason Aaron’s script masterfully hooks the reader. The mystery behind the other ninja teens’ whereabouts establishes itself smoothly. At the same time, Raph’s classic personality is confirmed to the benefit of new readers, who might think of him as the “cool but rude” dude from the cartoon. (Or is that “cool but crude?”)

The artwork of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #1 is as great as the writing. Joëlle Jones is widely regarded as one of the best artists in the business and her skills are on full display here. The general look is detailed yet simply rendered, with vivid action that flows easily between panels. Jones’ pencils are perfectly enhanced by the colors of Ronda Pattison and the letters of Shawn Lee.

Longtime fans of earlier IDW TMNT comics and newcomers alike will find a lot to enjoy in this issue. It builds on what came before, while offering a welcome entry point to those who have never read a Ninja Turtles comic before. With a solid story and amazing art, this is a must read.

    Grade : 5/5.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #1 arrives in comic shops everywhere on July 24, 2024.
