More than 1,500 pounds of illegal fireworks were seized by San Bernardino County deputies, and 134 tickets were issued during the weeklong enforcement campaign surrounding the Independence Day holiday, officials said.

The crackdown, dubbed "Operation Safe and Sane," took place between July 1 and July 7, according to the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department.

The Specialized Enforcement Division, Arson/Bomb Squad, station deputies, and fire department partners carried out a "zero-tolerance illegal firework suppression operation," the agency said in a written statement.

Deputies responded to 1,293 service calls related to fireworks during the period, officials said.

Some were the result of reports from the public, while others were "proactive patrol-initiated calls," officials said.
