KENTUCKY ( FOX 56 ) — In 2023, around 415,000 dogs and cats were euthanized in U.S. animal shelters, according to Best Friends.

Best Friends is an animal welfare organization striving for every animal shelter to be considered “no-kill” by 2025. The organization has partnered with animal shelters across the nation to reach this goal and recognize those who have.

On Thursday, the Danville-Boyle County Humane Society, a Best Friends partner, announced that the organization had achieved no-kill status for the third year in a row.

“This status is awarded to shelters that saved more than 90% of the dogs and cats in their care in the calendar year 2023,” the organization said. “We’re very proud to claim this status thanks to the hard work and dedication of our staff, volunteers, donors, and directors.”

“Since 2016, shelters that have engaged with Best Friends have had a two-times greater lifesaving impact than unengaged shelters,” Best Friends said on its website.
