ESSEX COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — Work to repair Route 17 in Essex County will start Monday, July 15, impacting drivers in the area.

According to the Virginia Department of Transportation, Route 17 will be reduced to a single lane near Spindle Shop Road for 24 hours a day for an estimated two weeks.

This closure is taking place so that a retaining wall can be built to stabilize the slope that supports Route 17 in the area. A contractor will drill holes beneath the road and insert steel rods around 20 feet into the ground.

Those rods will be covered with a mesh wire net and anchored with bolts. The surface will then be covered with a concrete material.
