By mid-July last year, dozens of itchy bug bites dotting my legs, I was wishing away my favorite season. What should be a carefree time of poolside lounging and backyard barbeques became a miserable period of scratching, whining, and writhing. I had to sweat through full-length leggings on dog walks and my patio became essentially unusable.

Something had to change; I was on an anti-mosquito mission. Fast forward to one night this spring, when I was cozy on the couch watching QVC. A host presented the DynaTrap , an LED bug trapper, and angels broke into song in my head. I turned to my boyfriend: we need that. Maybe you do, too. Now’s the time—it’s currently 37 percent off.

DynaTrap 1/2-Acre LED Mosquito & Insect Trap

    $50 $79 37% off Buy Now

The DynaTrap isn’t like the obnoxious, blindingly bright bug zappers of the ‘90s. This insect trap is subtle and nearly silent. It uses a combination of a warm UV light and a powerful fan to attract all kinds of uninvited guests. Once the bug is inside, it’s captured in the screened-in base and dies of dehydration, usually within a day. No chemicals, no mess, and (hopefully) no more bites.

I was skeptical, but the hundreds of positive reviews convinced me it couldn’t hurt to try. The DynaTrap promises to trap not only pesky mosquitoes, but also moths, wasps, crane flies, house flies, no-see-ums, beetles, and more. Just as noteable is what the DynaTrap will not catch: bees, butterflies, and ladybugs.

We opted for the DynaTrap that covers a half-acre radius, which I consider a gift to everyone on my block. This size measures a little over 11 inches tall and nearly eight-and-a-half inches in diameter and is sold in four neutral colors: burgundy, granite, midnight blue, and slate blue. The set-up couldn’t be easier either. The DynaTrap comes in one piece, so all you have to do is plug it in and turn it on.

It can be hung or set on any flat surface within reach of a plug, then keep it running continuously to nab as many bugs as possible. Once the trap is full, simply press a button to empty—no touching dead bugs necessary.

So what’s the verdict? Wow. One look at the catch trap and you’d be impressed, too. The DynaTrap is compact, discreet, nearly silent, and does its job. Sure, I still get the occasional mosquito bite here and there, but now I can enjoy my patio mostly pest free, even during dusk hours. Meanwhile, the bees and butterflies are living their best lives bouncing from zinnia to borage in my garden, and my tomato plants are thriving without pests attacking them. Everyone’s happy.
