BISMARCK, ND ( KXNET ) — North Dakota police, deputies, and troopers are encouraging people to buckle up before they hit the road.

A new look: All the changes at the North Dakota State

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) , most deadly accidents happen within 25 miles from home and involve motorists driving slower than 40 miles per hour.

The North Dakota Department of Transportation (NDDOT), reports that people not wearing their seatbelts accounted for 48% of motor vehicle fatalities in the state last year.

North Dakota law requires all drivers to wear their seat belts. In May, officers and troopers from several agencies spent time on the roads to enforce the “Click It or Ticket” campaign.

From May 1 to June 2, 2024, police and deputies say they issued 2,871 citations for drivers who failed to wear their seat belts and that included 42 for motorists who didn’t buckle in their children.

NDDOT says you can learn more about traffic safety by visiting the VisionZero website .
