Claim:
In a 2013 speech, former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said, "I would like to see people like Donald Trump run for office."

A Facebook user posted a screenshot on June 11, 2023, showcasing a picture of 2016 presidential candidates Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump standing next to one another. Under the photo the caption read:
Hillary Clinton in 2013: "I Would Like to See People Like Donald Trump Run For Office; They're Honest And Can't Be Bought."
We reported on this quote in 201 6 , labeling it "False." Our reasoning for that labelling remains the same. Nonetheless, the quote, which is cited as dating back to a 2013 speech she gave at a private Goldman Sachs event, has continued to spread across Facebook, as well as other platforms, like X .
The quote originated from a now defunct website, therightists.com, which in 2016 published an article positing that Clinton made the comment, based on transcripts from the private event released to the public by WikiLeaks.
In that transcript there is no mention of Trump, though. The most related quote from the transcript possibly tied to this quote was in response to a question from the audience at the event:
MALE ATTENDEE: My question is, as entrepreneurs, we risk a lot. And Mike Bloomberg had 30 billion other reasons than to take office. Do we need a wholesale change in Washington that has more to do with people that don't need the job than have the job?
SECRETARY CLINTON: That's a really interesting question. You know, I would like to see more successful business people run for office. I really would like to see that because I do think, you know, you don't have to have 30 billion, but you have a certain level of freedom. And there's that memorable phrase from a former member of the Senate: You can be maybe rented but never bought.
And I think it's important to have people with those experiences. And especially now, because many of you in this room are on the cutting edge of technology or health care or some other segment of the economy, so you are people who look over the horizon. And coming into public life and bringing that perspective as well as the success and the insulation that success gives you could really help in a lot of our political situations right now.
Like Snopes, Factcheck.org , Politifact and most recently Reuters all also found the quote to be false.
Because Clinton never mentioned Trump by name in the transcripts from the speech in question, we label the claim as "False."
