Triple-digit temperatures in the low desert have made hiking up the popular "Skyline Trail," also known as "Cactus to Clouds" in San Jacinto State Park , too dangerous.

Officials say they have been rescuing hikers overcome by the heat one after another, so the decision has been made to shut it down .

Garrett Fuhrman with the State Parks Department tells KNX News' Karen Adams that while they do not have a set reopen date, they are estimating it will be later this fall.

No other trails are currently impacted due to the heat, Fuhrman said, because "A lot of people who actually come to Mount San Jacinto State Park take the Palm Springs aerial tramway up to Long Valley, which is at the top of Mount San Jacinto and they take the trails into the wilderness there."

Fuhrman advises anybody seeking to explore the trails to acquire a day-use wilderness permit so that his team knows where hikers are, and if they get lost, they can find them.
