The only Friday night off for the Wilson Tobs in the 2024 Coastal Plain League season did not prove to be beneficial for the summer collegiate baseball team in the standings.

The Tobs didn’t lose any ground on East Division leader Peninsula since the Pilots saw their game at Tri-City rained out Friday, but Wilson slipped a half-game further behind the Wilmington Sharks in the all-important overall standings.

With first-half leader Peninsula dominating the second half of the East division standings, the Tobs can still qualify as the No. 2 East team in the Petitt Cup playoffs by finishing with the second-best overall record in the division. Wilson, 6-6 in the second half, stands 21-15 overall, leaving the Tobs 1 1/2 games behind Wilmington at 23-14. The Sharks won 3-2 at Greenville to move into a tie with the Holly Springs Salamanders at 7-6 in the second half.

The Tobs will visit the Yard Gnomes in Greenville on Saturday before welcoming the Sharks to Fleming Stadium on Sunday night at 6:30. The teams will meet one last time July 26 in Wilmington on the next-to-last day of the season.

Wilson is off Monday and Tuesday before traveling to Hampton, Virginia, on Wednesday to take on the Pilots. “Thirsty Thursday’s” clash with Holly Springs at Fleming will feature, weather permitting, a postgame fireworks extravaganza that has been rained out twice.
