Quest's latest acquisition to add assets from OhioHealth

Quest Diagnostics plans to acquire select assets of OhioHealth’s laboratory services business.

The Secaucus-headquartered testing provider announced the deal in a July 10 press release. Quest said the transaction will broaden access to cost-effective and innovative laboratory services in Ohio.

OhioHealth is a not-for-profit charitable health care group of the United Methodist Church. As part of the agreement, the target will transition its outreach testing to Quest’s full-service laboratory in Pittsburgh after the deal’s expected close during the third quarter of 2024. Financial terms were not disclosed.

The move will benefit providers and patients through access to Quest’s industry-leading test menu, network of patient service sites throughout the state, broad health plan coverage and lower out-of-pocket costs, the announcement said.

OhioHealth will continue to own and operate its hospital labs and services for inpatient and hospital-based outpatient care, anatomic pathology and oncology.

Chris Clinton is president of OhioHealth’s regional market and former vice president of shared services. "As healthcare transforms, we need to ensure we can continue to provide high-quality care to our patients that also provides them value," commented Clinton. "As a trusted industry leader, Quest has the specialization and scale to ensure our patients have continued access to high quality lab services that, in many cases, will be more affordable for patients.

"Our relationship with Quest is the right strategic step to enable us to continue to deliver exceptional care to improve the health of those we serve,” Clinton said.

    Growth mode

Quest also has a few other deals in the works.

Within the past week, the company announced plans to buy some lab assets from Allina Health , a nonprofit health care system in Minneapolis. It also expects to acquire Canada-based community laboratory provider LifeLabs for $985 million.

Both of those announcements came about a month after Quest completed its acquisition of key assets from Boston biotech PathAI Diagnostics. The company said the move is part of a goal to accelerate the use of artificial intelligence to improve quality, speed, and efficiency in diagnosing cancer and other diseases.

Quest Chairman, CEO and President Jim
    Davis
believes the transaction with OhioHealth “exemplifies our ability to attract and collaborate with high quality health systems seeking to optimize their lab services.”

"Health systems are increasingly turning to Quest because of our unique ability to deliver laboratory testing that is innovative, accessible and cost effective,”
    Davis
said. “This transaction also delivers on our strategy, which includes generating growth through accretive outreach lab acquisitions, and will extend our presence across Ohio."
