One-Year-Old Found By Trucker After Mother Abadons Him During Storm Beryl

A truck driver found a one-year-old boy alive in a ditch off an interstate highway in Louisiana, a day after the boy’s 4-year-old brother was found dead near the same freeway. Authorities believe the boys were abandoned during tropical storm Beryl’s conditions.

The boy’s mother, Aaliyah Jack,25, has been arrested in Mississippi and faces murder and other charges for allegedly abandoning her children in Louisiana. According to CNN , the investigation began Monday afternoon when the 4-year-old boy’s body was found floating in water behind a rest stop off I-10 in Calcasieu Parish, near the Texas state line. His cause of death was not announced. That day, Hurricane Beryl made landfall in Texas and weakened as it impacted Louisana.

Calcasieu Parish Sheriff Stitch Guillory praised the truck driver for noticing the child and stopping to help. “This kid spent two days out in the weather on the side of the highway. Thank God that trucker saw him,” he said. On Tuesday, truck driver Reginald Walton spotted the child on the embankment while driving and stopped to help . “Sure enough, there was a little boy sitting down the embankment. As I approached him, he smiled at me, then started crying and walked toward me,” Walton said.

The 1-year-old boy, identified as Jack’s son, was taken to a local hospital and later released to the state Department of Children and Family Services. Jack has been charged in Louisiana with second-degree murder, cruelty to a juvenile, and two counts of failure to report a missing child. Jack’s mother, Conswella Jack, said she last saw the children on Saturday at her mother’s funeral and learned about her 4-year-old grandson’s death on Tuesday.

She hopes to reunite with her surviving grandson soon as she remains in contact with child protective services for daily updates.
