As the blistering temperatures continue across Delaware, Sussex County has announced four designated cooling stations ahead of an anticipated heat wave.

The following air-conditioned locations are open to get a free break from the heat, throughout the summer:

    • County Administration Building (2 The Circle, Georgetown): open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on weekdays
    • Greenwood Library (100 Mill St., Greenwood): open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays; 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesdays; 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Fridays; and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturdays
    • Milton Library (121 Union St., Milton): open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Mondays and Tuesdays; 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Wednesdays and Thursdays; 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Fridays; and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturdays
    • South Coastal Library (43 Kent Ave., Bethany Beach): open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Mondays and Tuesdays; 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Wednesdays and Thursdays; 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Fridays; and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturdays

The county said paramedics will make routine stops at these cooling stations this week to answer any heat-related questions. Free bottles of water will also be available.

    Other hot weather tips

Sussex County recommends residents and visitors limit time outside, especially from 1-6 p.m. when it's hottest. Anyone who is outside should take frequent breaks and drink water. Other tips include:

    • Wear lightweight and light-colored clothing
    • Stay in properly ventilated areas
    • Avoid alcoholic beverages
    • Give pets extra water and provide them with shade or bring them inside
    • Know the signs of heat-related illnesses

The county said it expects demands for electricity will increase with the temperatures and asks residents and business operators to conserve power to avoid outages.
