    Hundreds still without power after heat causes outages in Hampden, Hampshire Counties

    SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Power problems continue in Springfield and Amherst Saturday morning as a few hundred households endure a warm overnight without electricity.

    Springfield’s 11th annual Jazz and Roots Festival begins

    There are just over 600 homes in Springfield without power at this time, and those outages trending down over the last few hours, but persisting Saturday morning in the Belmont Heights neighborhood. This is the second consecutive morning there have been significant outages in Springfield.

    In Amherst, there are 6,806 customers without power as of 6:55 a.m. according to the MEMA Outage Map.

    An Eversource spokesperson said two cable failures due to the hot weather knocked out power Friday morning and as the excessive heat continues, steady demand for air conditioners can cause the electrical system to overload.
