Over 1 Billion People Hit By Extremely Dangerous Heat In 2024.

Based on the global temperature, 2023 was the hottest year on record. This year is likely to top that. There is a lot of information about temperature records in the US, but it is only in the US press. And hundreds of temperature records have been broken in America. The most staggering is Las Vegas, where the mercury hit 120 degrees F one day.

While US temperatures have grabbed the headlines, the hottest places in the world are in Southeast Asia and Africa, where temperatures can be above 110 degrees for days. The Washington Post analyzed places with temperatures of 103 degrees for many days. Based on that threshold, at least 1.5 billion people have experienced it at least once this year. One hundred three degrees is the level at which heat is considered life-threatening.

Lagos, Nigeria (87 days), Bangkok (76 days), and Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam (61 days) were the places where the temperature was above 103 degrees for the most days this year.

These places will not be survivable for humans soon. Deaths will rise. Most are in poor areas where people cannot afford air conditioning. Even if they could, poor countries rarely have sophisticated energy grids. Eventually, and probably in this decade, there will be migrations of tens of millions of people from these areas. The problem is they have nowhere to go. ,
