    Birgitte was born Birgitte Eva van Deurs Henriksen in Odense, Denmark. She met Prince Richard in the late 1960s when he attended Cambridge University. Birgitte went to an elite finishing school in the British city. Their engagement was announced in February 1972, and they married on July 8, 1972.

    She became a duchess via tragedy: Six weeks after Birgitte and Prince Richard's wedding, Prince Richard's older brother, Prince William of Gloucester, died in a plane crash. It was then that Prince Richard inherited the title of Duke of Gloucester, making Birgitte Duchess of Gloucester.
