New York Giants players on roster bubble entering 2024 training camp

The New York Giants are just under two weeks away from the start of training camp when several roster bubble players will be competing for a spot.

As the regime led by general manager Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll try to fill a competitive roster, there will be several players vying for spots.

There are a lot of players right on the fringe of the roster. These bubble players could make the roster. They also could find themselves on the outside looking in either due to injuries, poor performance or teh fact that there may not be enough room.

When looking at roster bubble players, we'll do our best to avoid the obvious. Most undrafted rookie free agents don't have much of a shot at making the roster, barring a surprising breakout at training camp.

Here's a look at some of the biggest roster bubble players for the Giants entering training camp:

QB Tommy DeVito

With Daniel Jones locked into the starting role and Drew Lock behind him as the backup, it all comes down to whether the Giants want to keep three quarterbacks on the active roster. DeVito's spot as the QB3 is likely safe, regardless.

The only competition DeVito has for the QB3 role is Nathan Rourke, who was a waiver claim this offseason. So while DeVito's role is safe, it may come down to a numbers game and needing depth elsewhere.

RB Eric Gray

It's probably unlikely that Gray gets cut. He was drafted under the current regime in 2023 so they'll likely give him another chance. However, the Oklahoma product has struggled mightily in pass protection and with Devin Singletary handling the early-down work, that's a role Gray must excel in.

Rookie Tyrone Tracy Jr. already appears to be climbing the depth chart for the change-of-pace role over Gray. Again, it's unlikely the Giants cut Gray given the talent in the rest of the room, but it wouldn't be a total surprise after what he showed in 2023.

WR Isaiah Hodgins

The Giants seem to be sporting a strong wide receiver room going into the new season. The addition of Malik Nabers gives them an alpha to lead the room while Darius Slayton, Wan'Dale Robinson and Jalin Hyatt make up a strong quartet. The final one or two spots in the room may be reserved for special teams and role players.

Hodgins has been a fine depth piece and red-zone target for the Giants in the past, but it may just be a numbers game. He'll compete with Allen Robinson, Gunner Olszewski and Isaiah McKenzie for the final one or two roles at the position.

G Aaron Stinnie

Stinnie is a polarizing player for the Giants. Coming over from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in free agency this offseason, he has a wide range of outcomes. He could theoretically push for a starting guard spot or he could be released altogether if his preseason goes poorly.

The expected starting tandem at guard is Jermaine Eluemunor and Jon Runyan. The Giants may want to see what they have in undrafted free agent Jake Kubas, who earned some second-team reps in the spring. They also may want to continue developing 2023 fifth-round pick Marcus McKethan, who struggled in spot starts during his rookie season.

LB Carter Coughlin

The former seventh-round pick was a key special teams player for the Giants in 2023, and that's going to be the main way he makes the roster. Those players are needed on every team so he could find that to be his saving grace when it comes to the roster decisions.

However, the Giants also added rookie Darius Muasau in the sixth round of the NFL draft, and they signed veteran free agent Matthew Adams, who has been a core special teamer everywhere he's been. If both prove to be better assets on both defense and special teams, it may become a numbers game.

CB Tre Hawkins III

A sixth-round pick in the 2023 draft, Hawkins spent the majority of his snaps out wide for the Giants during his rookie season. It didn't end well. The Old Dominion product allowed an 80.8% completion rate and 157.2 passer rating on 26 targets, according to Pro Football Focus.

The Giants have their starting tandem in Deonte Banks and Cor'Dale Flott to begin the season while Nick McCloud, Darnay Holmes and rookie Andru Phillips also have depth spots. Hawkins could find himself on the outside looking in at the end of the preseason.
