Maine Coons are not your average cats. Not only are they outgoing and friendly, but they’re also quite vocal and have a variety of sounds that they use to communicate. Unsurprisingly, like many humans, females tend to be chattier than males.

This brother and sister are shiny examples of this social breed, and their compilation of sounds is like music to the ears. Listen to what they have to say in this video shared on July 8:

I could listen to these little chatterboxes all day! Maxie and Foxie’s (@ maxiecoon ) parents report that their Maine Coons have extensive vocabularies, and they make sounds that are more advanced than your average cats. Sweet Maxie also knows even more sounds than her handsome brother, and their noises are notably different.

The Many Sounds of Maine Coons

When hungry, Foxie’s meow is longer and more profound than his sisters, but both sound like they’re saying “Now.” Even when they’re expressing sadness, they have a slightly different pitch. However, the “Meow activation” noise for both is quite similar, as are their precious chirps. Their big, soulful yawns make me yawn, too! And the sweet purring of either one could put me to sleep at any time of the day.

After living with these gorgeous siblings, their parents can undoubtedly pick up on these many communication nuances. With Maine Coons , they never have trouble letting us know when they want to be heard. These expressive felines are always willing to tell us when they are hungry, thirsty, or in the mood to play. They always seem tuned into our emotions, so some of their sounds may be made to provide us with distraction and comfort.

Pet parents were familiar with this unique language. Viewer @lilley.caroline responded, “So different, but so beautiful. My Luna trills when she talks, especially when she sees you. Then there’s my male Maine Coon Enzo, who howls and growls.” Like people, they all have a unique personality. One person shared, “Maine Coons are the kookiest, loudest meowers when they can’t find you too. I leave one room and go into another, and you’d think my girl was dying, the way she carries on.” They have a clear understanding of how to project their voice. Another person joked, “My baby boy started talking more and more and more once he hit about one year old. Now he doesn’t shut up, lol.” Ha! I understand. My Maine Coon was notorious for using her voice nonstop in the middle of the night.

It’s always a pleasure to hear the music that comes from these charming noisemakers. Even if we may not fully understand what they’re saying, there’s no doubt they’re speaking from a place of love.
