BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ( WIAT ) — Alabama’s conservative politicians are getting ready for the Republican National Convention, which starts Monday.

According to the RNC, over 50,000 guests are expected to attend this year’s convention. Alabama’s delegates plan to cast all 50 votes for former President Donald Trump.

Commissioner Rick Pate of the Department of Agriculture and Industries is one of Alabama’s delegates. He believes this year’s convention will be one of the most important in U.S. history.

“Sometimes it can get really ugly, half-truths get told,” Pate said. “Hopefully we can paint a picture of the vision of what we want for America, and I think that’s what American citizens want.”

State Rep. Mack Butler (R-Gadsden) said the proposed party platform removes some federal protections involving abortion, which will also be voted on.

“Being immensely pro-life myself and being from a pro-life state, there’s some watering down of the language that I’ve never seen before,” Butler said. “I’m hoping that when this comes to the floor that we can vote that portion down where they’re watering down our platform.”

State Rep. Juandalynn Givan (D-Birmingham) said regardless of the party, it’s about voting for someone who ensures our democracy stays intact.

“He’s their choice, this is about democracy,” said Givan. “Vote them up, or vote them down. My whole thing to anyone is just go vote. Make sure you go vote in November.”

The convention will also feature a slate of vice-presidential candidates, from Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) and North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum.
