Spain striker Alvaro Morata scored against Liverpool in the Champions League and apologized to the Atletico Madrid fans shortly after it went in. The former Real Madrid and Juventus star is currently preparing for the Euro 2024 final with Spain, where he will face off against Trent Alexander-Arnold' s England teammates.

Morata, 31, has scored one goal and added one assist during the international tournament in Germany but his contributions have spanned far wider than just his goal involvement. The Spain captain has regularly been seen tracking back, making crucial interceptions and relieving any kind of pressure on his team - to the delight of the Spanish fanbase.

Despite warming the hearts of his supporters currently, this hasn't always been the case - as his performances in the 2020 Champions League outlined.

Atletico and Liverpool, who won the competition in the previous season, met in the round of 16 just over four years ago. Saul secured a 1-0 victory for the Spanish giants at home in the first leg, while the second meeting proved to be much more eventful. Georginio Wijnaldum opened the scoring in the 43rd minute at Anfield - which then sent the game to extra-time.

Roberto Firmino looked as if he had won the clash in the 94th minute, only for Marcos Llorente to score a quick-fire brace shortly after. With the scoreline sat at 3-2 to Atletico on aggregate, Morata then secured their place in the next round with a tie-clinching goal in the 120th minute.

After the goal, pitch-side microphones picked up the Spanish forward apologizing to the Atletico fans for the team's performance. "To everyone, to everyone," he said.

Atletico would go on to be knocked out by Bundesliga side RB Leipzig in the quarter-final, with Bayern Munich eventually going on to lift the trophy with a 1-0 win against Paris Saint-Germain.

Liverpool.com says: Morata has developed a lot since that clash against Liverpool and is now a mentor to the younger players within the Spanish squad - such as Nico Williams. He may have knocked Liverpool out all those years ago but he could now be doing the Reds a favour with the experience he is passing on to younger players such as the left winger, who continues to be linked with a move to Anfield this summer.
