STANWOOD, WA - A routine drive home turned harrowing late last night when a collision on East Sunday Lake Road and State Route 532 left one person injured. The incident unfolded just before 10:30 p.m., disrupting the otherwise calm night in this small Snohomish County community.

Crystal M. DeGraaf, 38, was behind the wheel of her 2016 Honda Civic, heading east on East Sunday Lake Road. As she approached the intersection with SR532, she attempted to make a left turn onto the eastbound lanes. Unfortunately, she failed to yield to an oncoming motorcycle, a 2005 Harley-Davidson, driven by 25-year-old Jacob C. Feis, who was traveling westbound on SR532.

Witnesses described a chaotic scene as Feis, seeing the Honda Civic turn in front of him, desperately tried to avoid a collision. Despite his efforts, the motorcycle struck the left rear of the Civic, sending both vehicles skidding across the road and coming to rest blocking the eastbound lanes of SR532.

Emergency responders arrived quickly. DeGraaf, shaken but alert, was evaluated at the scene by paramedics. Feis, however, sustained injuries that required immediate medical attention. He was swiftly transported to Providence Hospital, where he is currently receiving treatment. The extent of his injuries remains undisclosed.

The Washington State Patrol, who responded to the accident, confirmed that neither drugs nor alcohol were factors in the crash. Both vehicles were deemed totaled and were removed from the scene by Dick’s Towing, a local towing company based in Stanwood. DeGraaf was confirmed to be wearing her seatbelt, while it remains unclear whether Feis was wearing a USDOT-compliant helmet at the time of the crash.

The cause of the accident was attributed to DeGraaf’s failure to yield while making the turn. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of cautious driving, especially at night and at intersections.

As the investigation continues, the community hopes for Feis’ swift recovery. Local residents, accustomed to the tranquil nature of their town, are left to reflect on how quickly a normal evening drive can turn tragic.
