The golden era of classic rock has come and gone, and many of the biggest hitmakers of the era are still well-known today. But what about the underdogs, the unsung heroes, the underrated classic rock bands of that era? Let’s explore seven stellar classic rock outfits that deserve some love for their contributions to rock music!
1. Traffic
When it came to experimenting with different instruments not typically seen in rock bands, Traffic was leading the charge. These English musicians leaned towards the psychedelic through the use of instruments like harpsichords, sitars, brass instruments, and even the fascinating Mellotron.
2. Squeeze
Squeeze became popular in the 1970s when new wave started taking off. Glenn Tilbrook and Chris Difford were stellar songwriters that made the band what it was. And luckily for fans, they’re still touring today.

3. The Animals
A notable band that was part of the “British Invasion”, The Animals were piquing the interest of American listeners before the Beatles were even a thing. The British band was notably influenced by American music, specifically R&B. However, they injected a dark and mysterious vibe into their music that made them stand out from the rest.
4. April Wine
This Canadian rock outfit made incredible music in the 1970s but were often overshadowed by bigger names like Rush and Aerosmith. If you love classic rock bands but haven’t heard of this stellar underrated outfit, we recommend listening to any of their 20+ albums.
5. Thin Lizzy
Thin Lizzy’s “The Boys Are Back In Town” is a legendary song that has been used (or, perhaps, overused at this point) in film and television for decades. However, their discography has a ton of similar jams that haven’t gotten enough attention. Bad Reputation and Jailbreak are essential listening.
6. Big Star
Big Star’s career was short and sweet, and each of their three albums has a ton of listening power today. Their vocal harmonies were unmatched at the time and their jammy guitar riffs are a delight. You can hear their influence in bands like The Replacements.
7. The Kinks
Some might argue that The Kinks are not underrated. However, we don’t think they’ve gotten enough recognition for their contributions to early rock history. “You Really Got Me” was a stellar hit and one of the very first recorded songs to make use of guitar distortion. Tons of bands in the decades that followed have cited them as inspirations and influences, from The Ramones to Oasis to The Clash.
