New CBS comedy Poppa’s House, which stars Damon Wayans and Damon Wayans Jr., is shifting its focus to make it more of a family show.

Wayans plays a legendary talk radio host in the series, which premieres on October 21 at 8:30pm, but will now become a podcaster to allow the comedy to more centered at home, rather than at a radio station.

Showrunner Dean Lorey, speaking at the TCA press tour, “We’re making a couple of shifts in the show. We did a show called Poppa’s House so we want to see more of Poppa’s House, we want that to be very much the center of the show. So in the season, we’re going to see Poppa make a shift from the radio station to doing a podcast at home. That will allow us to bring the life of the family more into the show and gets these two guys together all of the time.”

Poppa has his point of view challenged at work when new female co-host Ivy, played by Essence Atkins, is hired, and at home where he finds himself still parenting his adult son, Junior, played by Damon Wayan Jr., a brilliant dreamer who is trying to pursue his passion while being a responsible father and husband.

“We’re making a classic family sitcom. Our little spin on it is that we’re doing it with an actual family. We’ve got Damon Wayans Sr. and Damon Wayans Jr. But it’s not just them, we have a ton of the Wayans family working with this behind the scenes, it’s very much a family affair. On the writing staff, we have Kim Wayans and Shawn Wayans, Michael Wayans. It’s just a very fun family atmosphere and family is sort of key to what we’re trying to do with the show,” Lorey added.

Lorey exec produces the show, which is produced by CBS Studios, alongside Kevin Hench, Wayans and Wayans Jr. Andy Ackerman directed and exec produced the pilot, while Kameron Tarlow is the producer at Wayans Jr.’s Two Shakes Entertainment overseeing the project.
