ARLINGTON, Va. -- On July 5, 2024, the Arlington County Police Department is conducting an in-depth investigation following a Metro Transit Police officer-involved shooting that took place in the Rosslyn neighborhood. The incident involved a series of vehicle-related offenses.
The sequence of events began around 11:30 a.m. when an adult male suspect approached an occupied vehicle at the intersection of Fort Myer Drive and 19th Street N. The suspect attempted to open the car door but was unsuccessful as the driver quickly drove away. Undeterred, the suspect continued walking along Fort Myer Drive and approached a second occupied vehicle. This time, he managed to open the back door and entered the vehicle, startling the driver who then exited the car.
A Metro Transit Police officer witnessed the incident and ordered the suspect to exit the vehicle. After the suspect complied, a struggle ensued as the officer tried to detain him. The suspect managed to flee on foot, prompting a chase.
During the pursuit, Metro Transit Police used pepper spray in an attempt to subdue the suspect. However, he continued to evade capture and eventually entered an unoccupied, running trash truck at the corner of N. Kent Street and 19th Street N. Ignoring commands to exit the truck, the suspect remained inside, leading the officer to discharge their firearm and strike the suspect. Immediate lifesaving measures were administered by Metro Transit Police before the suspect was transported to a local hospital, where he remains in stable condition.
In the course of the investigation, police have identified the suspect as Mark Anthony Johnson-Crestwell, 30. He faces multiple charges including Unauthorized Use of a Vehicle, Resisting Arrest, Obstruction of Justice, and Vehicle Trespass. The Arlington County Police Department continues to explore the series of events and is requesting additional information from the public.
Anyone with information or whose vehicle may have been entered is urged to contact the Arlington County Police Department’s Tip Line at 703-228-4180 or ACPDTipline@arlingtonva.us. Anonymous reports can also be made through the Arlington County Crime Solvers hotline at 1-866-411-TIPS (8477).
The investigation remains active, with detectives particularly interested in speaking with the occupants of a dark-colored Jeep Cherokee, possibly with Maryland license plates, involved in the earlier stages of the incident.
