Radiohead’s Jonny Greenwood “Out of Danger” Following Medical Emergency

Academy Award-nominated composer and Radiohead guitarist Jonny Greenwood is “out of danger” following a medical emergency that occurred yesterday. As a result of the medical emergency, the musician’s band The Smile (which also features Radiohead member Thom York and Sons Of Kemet drummer Tom Skinner) will need to put their tour on hold until Greenwood is out of the woods completely.

According to a statement released by the band, Greenwood will return home from the hospital soon. Unfortunately, the rest of The Smile’s tour dates will be canceled. Information on refunds and rescheduling efforts will likely be released in the next few weeks.

What Was Jonny Greenwood’s Medical Emergency?

According to the above-mentioned statement, Greenwood’s illness stemmed from an infection that landed the guitarist in the ICU.

“A few days ago, Jonny became seriously ill from an infection that needed emergency hospital treatment, some of it in intensive care,” the statement read. “Mercifully he is now out of danger and will soon return home. We have been instructed by the medical team in charge of Jonny’s care to cancel all engagements until he has had time to make a full recovery. To that end, The Smile tour of Europe in August is canceled. We all wish Jonny a speedy recovery.”

The exact nature of the infection and the extent of Greenwood’s hospitalization have not been revealed. The statement, which was posted to the band’s X account, has garnered a number of well-wishes from fans of Greenwood and The Smile.

Greenwood is known for his compositions for a number of films and series. Just a few include There Will Be Blood and The Phantom Thread. He has been the lead guitarist, keyboardist and co-founder of Radiohead for decades. Greenwood has also been inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame as a Radiohead member as of 2019.

The recent cancellation of The Smile’s tour due to Greenwood’s unfortunate illness is just one instance of many recent illness-related cancellations. Nancy Wilson (of Heart) recently revealed her cancer diagnosis and has canceled all touring activities for the next year. Stevie Nicks and Josh Homme (of Queens Of The Stone Age) have canceled part of their current tours due to illnesses and injuries in the last month as well.
