(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The back-to-school shopping season is upon us, and the National Retail Federation projects spending will reach more than $81 billion this year.

Popular items tend to be clothing, shoes, electronics, and computer-related equipment. But with a short sales window, scammers make it their business to take advantage of tight timelines and deals that are too good to be true.

Always check company ratings and reviews, research brands and compare pricing. Beware of phony websites that may use names and logos of brands you trust, and be on the lookout for fake digital ads and fraudulent emails with overly amazing deals.
