LAUREL RUN, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Engines are also revving this weekend near Wilkes-Barre.

Dozens of people gathered this morning to watch day one of the competition for the 118th Giant’s Despair Hillclimb.

Drivers from across the country are taking the road known for its sharp turns and steep incline… To see who can get to the top of the mountain the fastest.

Business is booming during race weekend in Monroe County

The event also features dozens of local vendors, food, live entertainment, and of course the opportunity to check out the rides.

The tradition which dates back to 1906 is a must-see for for many families year after year.

“I’ve been coming here with my father since I was about 5 years old and it’s been a family tradition for me, him, and actually my daughter is here too today, so it’s a really good time,” stated Ryan Williams from Ashley.

The Giants Despair Hillclimb runs through Sunday in Luzerne County.
