Canada came so agonizingly close to an historic result, going in front with 10 minutes to go in regulation, but couldn't hold on as they fall to Uruguay in the third place match at the 2024 Copa America on a penalty shootout after a 2-2 draw.

Rodrigo Betancur's early goal had Uruguay feeling strong, but Ismael Kone's gorgeous overhead flick brought Canada back level before halftime.

After both sides had rung all their substitutions, Jonathan David came in off the bench and put Canada in front in the 80th minute, completing the comeback and looking as if Les Rouges would be through with a podium finish at their first-ever Copa America.

But it was not to be, as substitute Luis Suarez, likely in his final Copa America, dramatically equalized in the 92nd minute and forced a penalty shootout, where poor efforts from Ismael Kone (saved) and Alphonso Davies (missed) gave Uruguay the ultimate victory.

Canada head coach Jesse Marsch once again inspired a valiant effort from his side who went toe-to-toe with mighty Uruguay despite a rotated lineup, but the late collapse was also a touch of their own doing. They refused to sit back and protect the lead once David put them in front, and the game remained wide open and frantic, which ultimately saw Suarez equalize late.

CanMNT boss Jesse Marsch confirmed star man Alphonso Davies's x-rays were "negative" after he suffered a foot injury in Tuesday's semifinal defeat to Argentina, but it remains unclear if he would be able to feature in Saturday's game. It felt unlikely he would be involved, and sure enough he's not in the starting lineup.

In fact, Marsch has decided to heavily rotate his squad after he bemoaned his own lack of rotation through the tournament proper. He underwent a successful surgery in the following days and while he eventually joined his teammates, he won't be available at Marsch’s disposal.
