(The Center Square) – Both Republicans and Democrats quickly condemned Saturday's shooting attack on former President Donald Trump at a campaign event in Pennsylvania.

Republicans used images of a bloodied Trump as a rallying cry to support his reelection, and billionaire Elon Musk fully endorsed him after the attack.

After Trump was shot, with a bullet grazing his right ear, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott said, “They try to jail him. They try to kill him. It will not work. He is indomitable.”

Abbott posted a picture of Trump on social media in which he is wearing a white shirt and blue jacket, with blood on his face, saying , “Red, White, and Blue. LEGEND.”

U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, responded by saying , “This is horrific & wrong & evil. Thank God he appears not to be seriously injured,” adding that he and his wife were praying for him.

After Trump got up from the stage, he can be heard saying, “wait, wait,” to his Secret Service personnel. He then turns to the crowd, lifts his fist in the air, and shouts, “fight, fight.” The crowd erupted in a thundering roar.

U.S. Rep. Chip Roy, R-Texas, said , “President Trump made his protectors stop. He then took the moment to stand right back up. In that moment of courage & clarity – he spoke for all of America,” referring to him shouting, “fight, fight.”

After Trump was shot, billionaire Elon Musk endorsed Trump for president on his platform X, formerly known as Twitter. Posting a video of Trump getting up from the stage, he said, “I fully endorse President Trump and hope for his rapid recovery.”

Musk also posted a picture of a bloodied Trump with his fist in the air and the American flag in the background, saying, “Last time America had a candidate this tough was Theodore Roosevelt.”

Donald Trump Jr., said of his father, “He'll never stop fighting to Save America.”

Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry, a Republican, agreed, saying , “It’s a dark time in our nation. Now more than ever we need to pray for America and pray for President Trump. There is no one who stands up more for our country than Donald Trump.”

Media outlets are reporting that a civilian was killed and another seriously wounded in the gunfire.

In response, U.S. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Green, R-GA, said , “People at the rally are shot. Possibly one fatality. Pray for everyone involved!!! Pray for President Trump!!! May God have mercy on our enemies because we will NOT.”

House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-Louisiana, said he and his wife were also praying for the former president “and all the attendees of the campaign rally today in Pennsylvania.” He thanked law enforcement who responded and said he’d been briefed by law enforcement and was monitoring the developments.

Johnson condemned the attack, saying, “This horrific act of political violence at a peaceful campaign rally has no place in this country and should be unanimously and forcefully condemned.”

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-New York, agreed, also issuing a statement saying, “I am horrified by what happened at the Trump rally in Pennsylvania and relieved that former President Trump is safe. Political violence has no place in our country.”

Several Democratic governors condemned the attack.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom condemned the attack, saying , “Violence has NO place in our democracy. My thoughts are with President Trump and everyone impacted at the rally today.”

Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker also condemned the violence, saying , “Violence is never the answer in our democracy. I am closely monitoring the situation and praying for former President Trump's recovery. Thankful to the Secret Service for their quick response.”

Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer responded, saying , “There is no place for political violence in this country, period. This is not how we solve our differences. I am horrified to learn of this news, and we will be following the situation closely. I am grateful for those in law enforcement who stepped in immediately.”

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul said , “Any violence against a fellow American is disgusting and unacceptable. We must express political disagreements peacefully, civilly and respectfully. I am praying for the safety and health of former President Trump and all who are attending this event in Pennsylvania.”
