Hellboy fans joke new look at upcoming film resembles ‘SNL spoof’ and think it’s a ‘step down’ from previous movie

HELLBOY fans have mocked that the first look at the new movie resembles a Saturday Night Live spoof, and is a step down from previous films.

Hellboy: The Crooked Man wrapped principal photography on May 15, 2024, and is scheduled to release in theaters later this year.

The 2024 reboot features Jack Kesy as the titular Hellboy – based on the Dark Horse Comics character created by Mike Mignola.

The X , formally Twitter, pop culture account Discussing Film shared a movie still of Kesy in the role captioned, “New look at Hellboy in ‘HELLBOY: THE CROOKED MAN”

The Deadpool 2 actor was shown airbrushed the muted red color of the demonic investigator and sported a horn and arm prosthetics.

In the post’s comment section, one fan wrote, “Hellboy looks significantly worse with every reboot.”

“This looks fan-made,” commented another.

“Is this a CW show?” asked a third, referring to the network responsible for Riverdale .

“Looks like a SNL spoof of Hellboy,” one user joked.

“This is such a downgrade. Ron is gonna stay the Real Hellboy for me,” complained a fifth.”

Ron Perlman , 74, played Hellboy in the Guillermo del Toro-directed Hellboy and Hellboy II: The Golden Army.

One fan joked, “The Hellboy we have at home,” when rating the new actor’s makeup.

“I’ll give this a chance since the actual creator of Hellboy was part of this project, but I don’t know, I have mixed feelings, we’ll see,” tweeted another.

“Hot take, I think Hellboy visually is getting better each time,” commented a third.

DISAPPOINTED AS HELL

Earlier this month, the Hellboy: The Crooked Man trailer dropped and fans are unimpressed .

The trailer opened with scenic views of trees, mountains, and forests in Appalachia.

Creepy footage, including a woman being levitated in the air after being bitten by snakes and figures standing in the woods, followed

Bugs and other unseemly creatures appear in the trailer.

Another woman can be heard saying, “All of your friends. They’re all gonna die.”

Hellboy: The Crooked Man is set in the 1950s and follows the hero and Adeline Rudolph as they try to protect the residents of Appalachia from The Crooked Man.

The Crooked Man tries to collect souls for the devil.

‘THOUGHT IT WAS FANMADE’

Once the trailer was posted to X, fans ripped it apart immediately with one claiming, “Almost thought this was fan-made at first glance.”

“Looks like a fanmade trailer, but I’m gonna give it a try,” wrote another.

“Some Hollywood exec said, ‘Let’s make a cheap budgeted horror movie with a popular IP,'” a third added.

“This looks terrible,” said another.

ABOUT THE FILM

In addition to Jack and Adeline Rudolph, the film also stars Yellowstone ‘s Jefferson White as Tom Ferrel, Leah McNamara as Effie Kolb, Joseph Marcell as Reverend Watts, Hannah Margetson as Cora Fisher, and Martin Bassindale as the Crooked Man.

The Crooked Man was written by Mike and Christopher Golden and directed by Brian Taylor.

The film was shot in Bulgaria from March to May 2023.

Hellboy: The Crooked Man is the first film in the franchise since 2019’s self-titled reboot starring David Harbour in the title role.
