Destiny Wells named Democratic nominee for Indiana Attorney General

INDIANAPOLIS — Destiny Wells, the first candidate who announced her intention to run against Republican incumbent Todd Rokita in November’s election, is officially the Democratic nominee for Indiana’s attorney general.

During Saturday’s 2024 Indiana Democratic Party Convention, delegates chose Wells as the Democratic nominee for the state’s attorney general position.

Wells, an attorney and combat veteran who serves as the deputy chair of the Indiana Democratic Party, announced her candidacy for attorney general in November 2023.

During her announcement, Wells said that her priorities include:

• Medical privacy
• Support workers’ rights
• Focus on the needs/safety of community

Wells previously ran as the Democratic candidate for Indiana’s secretary of state position in 2022, losing to Republican Diego Morales at that time.

This previous campaign experience is something that Wells sees as a plus, she told FOX59/CBS4, stating that she has the “best information and the best network” going into November.

“We already built the plane in ‘22,” she said. “We are up in the air and we are already pretty far ahead. We are going to take that momentum to Todd (Rokita) in the fall.”

According to previous reports, Rokita announced in February 2023 that he would seek reelection for Indiana Attorney General. Running unopposed, Rokita was selected by delegates as the Republican nominee during the Indiana Republican Party’s convention earlier this year.

Since he announced his reelection bid, Rokita has used his office to speak about a number of topics, including calling for higher education institutions to combat antisemitism and launching a portal for parents, teachers and students to upload “ potentially inappropriate materials ” that students are reportedly exposed to in the classroom.

Rokita was also the subject of a public reprimand by the Indiana Supreme Court earlier this year surrounding comments he made regarding his office’s investigation into Dr. Caitlin Bernard on Fox News. Rokita was found to have violated the Indiana Rules of Professional Conduct.

Wells previously told FOX59/CBS4 that she sees this race as an opportunity to relitigate what Rokita has done in the position. Wells said she wants to “get back to business,” if she is elected to the position.

“(Rokita) is using that office now more for activism than what it is supposed to be,” she said. “I tell people that the best attorney general is one where you walk in the office, you don’t know if they are a Democrat or a Republican, you just know that they are a great attorney serving the people.”
