JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (WJHL) — Tri-Cities Republican lawmakers expressed shock and grief after an apparent assassination attempt at a rally by former president and current candidate Donald Trump on Saturday.

The suspected gunman and at least one attendee are dead and two more were critically injured, according to officials.

Congresswoman Diana Harshbarger told News Channel 11 she was watching the rally on television when shots rang out.

“It shocked me, it really did,” Harsbarger said. “When you see it happening and you see the president go down, it’s a little bit of a frightening situation.”

Harshbarger said her primary concern was gathering more information about how the shooter was able to get so close to the rally and to the former president.

“The guys and gals that were there tonight did a fabulous job, but why didn’t they sweep that earlier and how did he get there?” Harshbarger said.

State Rep. Rebecca Alexander (R-Jonesborough) told News Channel 11 that she was devastated by the violence.

“I’m heartbroken that we’ve come to this in our country, where we can have a difference of opinion without someone getting horribly hurt, and so sad for the family that lost an innocent bystander,” Alexander said. ” I’m so thankful that Donald Trump was not killed. I would feel the same if it was our current president.”

Both women said they were praying for Trump and for the families of the individual who died at the rally.
