New Life: Bedford County Fair Resurrected

BEDFORD, Va. (WFXR) — County fairs are a Virginia tradition, and this is the start of the county fair season in the Commonwealth.

This is a special fair season in Bedford County. Its county fair is being resurrected. For the first time since 2019, there will be a Bedford County Fair.

Problems with a venue and the COVID pandemic meant the fair was put on hold. This year it will be held in a county-owned open field on Falling Creek Road near the Bedford County Sheriff’s Office.

“The Bedford County Fair includes all the nostalgic elements of a classic county fair,” said fair superintendent Joy Powers. “We have livestock; we have midway rides; we have great food; music and entertainment with daily concerts; and we have a fireworks show that weekend.”

Powers has been working with dozens of other people to make the fair happen. She says the idea behind the fair is simple; provide families with entertainment while putting them into contact with the people who grow and produce their food.

“Agriculture is so important, not just to the farmers in our county, but also to the consumers who eat their products everyday,” said Powers. “So at the fair, what we get to do is to bridge that gap. We get to introduce families to farmers, and farmers to the families they serve, and that’s something we’re really excited and proud about.”

The 2024 Bedford County Fair will be held August 23 through August 25. Admission and parking will be free.

Powers says she is working to create a permanent venue for the fair so that it can be held every year from now on.
