The apparent winners in new car sales so far this year are small, affordable cars and SUVs. It’s been a tough few weeks for new car buyers, and not just because of higher interest rates and transaction prices. Cyberattacks on major software vendor CDK Global hobbled some 15,000 dealerships’ ability to get into a selling stride, right as we head into the 4th of July holiday. While the company says all the affected dealers should be back online as of Tuesday, it still undoubtedly took a bite out of sales in the last week of June. A study by Anderson Economic Group (as reported by Automotive News) indicates that the system shutdown could cost dealers anywhere from $600 million to as much as $1 billion. As automakers and shareholders cross their fingers for strong sales as we pass 2024’s halfway point, we now have an opportunity to get a closer look at just how many new cars and trucks you all bought in the past six months compared to the same time frame last year.
