POSEY COUNTY, Ind. (WEHT) — Residents continue to recoup from this week’s tornadoes. Firefighters tell Eyewitness News it’s a blessing no one was hurt.

“The biggest reason that the incident went as well as it could have went is because there was really no injury anywhere in the county over that tornado event,” says Black Township Fire and Rescue Chief Jay Price referencing the destruction at the Reckitt-Kenco facility in Mount Vernon. “That’s a blessing, and that’s a God thing that nobody got hurt from the destruction that was there.

Chief Price believes we would be having a much difference conversation if there were injuries.

On Tuesday afternoon, a tornado ripped through Posey and Gibson Counties, damaging not only the Kenco warehouse, but several properties and a shopping center.

Chief Price attributes teamwork and experience to ensure everyone was okay.

“For the most part, the incident for what it was went extremely well,” Chief Price recalls. “All emergency responders learned a lot, and they’ll have that for the future that hopefully we won’t. But, if we have some kind of situation, we’ll be prepared.”

Now a couple days after the storms, there’s a different kind of teamwork happening in Posey County.

    Cleanup is in full swing.

Eyewitness News is told a man named Bosko lived near a property off Record Road, but he recently passed away.

Bosko’s family and friends are volunteers from BWXT are picking up tree debris that fell near his home.

We caught up with Bosko’s mother — Laura Frisby — at the grocery store beforehand near where the storms hit.

“The community has always pulled together in times of need,” Frisby says. “I love that we are like extended family. I just went through a loss and this community rallies around you when you’re in need. People you don’t even know jump in and help you.”

Looking forward, Frisby hopes to community can rally behind the Kenco workers in town.

“I know my general manager has already said from BWXT that if they don’t have work, that we’re going to do what we can as a company to try to absorb some of their jobs, so that they’re not without work” Frisby says. “I hope and I believe that a lot of our other businesses will do so as well.”
