Another round of severe overnight storms possible in Minnesota

    By Joe Nelson,

After severe storms pummeled the I-94 corridor on Saturday night and Sunday morning, more storms are forecast to move through the region late Sunday into Monday morning.

"Thunderstorms should develop upstream in the Dakotas this evening and track into western Minnesota tonight into Monday morning. Storms could be strong to severe. Primary concern is damaging wind gusts and large hail," says the National Weather Service office in Chanhassen.

The Storm Prediction Center is focusing on North Dakota into northwestern Minnesota for severe storms late Sunday into Monday morning. The latest outlook shown below from the HRRR model shows storms blowing up in North Dakota around 10 p.m. and moving east-southeast into Minnesota after midnight.

That specific model shows further development in northeastern South Dakota that pushes into western and then south-central Minnesota. That too could be severe if it pans out as the HRRR model suggests.

The NAM 3km model produces a similar scenario:

It's a similar setup to what happened late Saturday into Sunday morning as storms ripped along the I-94 corridor and pounded the Monticello area with baseball-sized hail and pumped out damaging winds that knocked out power to thousands of residents in the Twin Cities.

More storms could hit southern Minnesota, Wisconsin and Iowa on Monday, especially if the morning storms get out of the area quickly and don't allow for lingering cloud cover. We'll have a much better idea of what's going to unfold on Monday...on Monday, so check back for updates.
