1 dead in Portage County rollover

A 50-year-old man is dead after a single-vehicle crash Saturday in the Portage County town of Buena Vista, officials said.

The crash was reported at 5:15 p.m. on Hwy. JJ about 600 feet south of Coddington Road. The victim has been identified as William C. Scarce, of Bancroft.

Police say Scarce was driving a 2001 Buick passenger car southbound when he lost control of the vehicle, left the roadway and overturned several times in a nearby farm field. Scarce was ejected from the vehicle and died at the scene, officials said.

Speed, inattentive driving and drug use are being considered as contributing factors in the crash.

No other vehicles or passengers were involved in the crash.
