A band’s success comes from the sum of its parts. It takes the right bassist, singer, drummer, and guitarist with the right musical image to make a rock band great. However, many classic rock guitarists from even the biggest bands of all time don’t get the recognition they deserve for being certified shredders on their own. Let’s dive into four of the most underrated classic rock guitarists of all time! Though, we’d like to note that this list is far from exhaustive. There are so many guitarists from classic rock bands that are underrated.

    1. Mike McCready

Known for being a founding member of the rock band Pearl Jam, Mike McCready helped make the iconic band what it is today. His musicianship is very underrated, to say the least. McCready knows how to combine the theatric energy of an arena guitarist with the gritty grime of an alt-rock guitarist with decades of experience.

    2. Gary Richrath

The late great Gary Richrath added a unique sort of richness to REO Speedwagon’s music back in the day. He delivered countless incredible guitar solos throughout the band’s various eras and made it look so easy. For those unfamiliar with REO Speedwagon, give “Golden Country” and “Tough Guys” a listen to get a feel for Richrath’s talent.

    3. Frank Zappa

Putting Frank Zappa on a list of underrated classic rock guitarists might seem odd. However, this writer feels that Zappa’s infamy came more from his incredible compositions and overall image, rather than his underrated guitar-playing ability. It’s debatable, without a doubt, but he still deserves a spot on this list.

    4. Jeff Healey

Jeff Healey was a true trailblazer for disabled musicians. Blind since infancy, Healey wasn’t interested in letting his disability get in the way of his musical career. He was an incredible talent on the guitar, which he was known for playing untraditionally on his lap. He was one of the greats who was taken far too soon at the age of 41 from cancer. “Angel Eyes” by The Jeff Healey Band is essential listening if you want a good introduction to his work.
