German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has thanked everyone involved in the successful hosting of the Euro 2024 tournament culminating in Sunday night's final between Spain and England.

"Together, the country shared in the excitement, cheered and even shed a few tears: EURO 2024 was something very special!" Scholz said on platform X.

"Thank you to our boys from the DFB [German] team, the fans from all over the world, the volunteers and the security staff. It wouldn't have been possible without you!"

The Euros with 24 teams took place in 10 German cities from June 14 onwards amid huge interest and only a few incidents. Hosts Germany went out in the quarter-finals against Spain.

Thousands of Spanish and English fans were meanwhile celebrating ahead of the final in Berlin's Olympic Stadium where Spain aim for a record fourth title and England for first silverware since winning the 1966 World Cup.

The two sets of supporters gathered at separate fan zones, with the lucky ones with tickets then proceeding to the stadium where Spain's King Felipe VI and Britain's Prince of Wales are also expected.
