INDIANAPOLIS — Libertarian candidate for Indiana Governor Donald Rainwater said he was shocked and worried after someone tried to kill former President Donald Trump. However, his main concern quickly became the fear that political talk could become violent.

“We should be working diligently to avoid the type of inflammatory rhetoric that results in acts of aggression against politicals or others that we disagree with in general,” Rainwater said. “I don’t think it’s correct of me to blame anyone for this attack. I don’t have all of the facts. I believe that is, in part, part of the problem.”

Rainwater has noticed a lot of blaming on social media. People are quick to point fingers, which only makes things worse.

“Until we know the facts behind why that individual did what they did, whether there was anyone involved else or not, the blame lies on the person that committed the act.”

Rainwater appeared at the Johnson County 4-H fair on Sunday. He said he knows there’s always a chance he could be targeted in a public attack because people often disagree with public figures.

“I don’t think it (potential for violence) is limited to politicians,” he said. “One of the things we have to look at as a society is how we treat these actions. I’ve read the name of the individual who carried out this attack, and I struggle with whether these details should be reported.”

The FBI has named the person who tried to assassinate former President Donald Trump at a rally on Saturday night. The man is 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks from Bethel Park, Pennsylvania.

Rainwater questions whether we should name people who try to hurt or kill public figures in the media. He thinks this might encourage others to do it for attention.

“In many cases, that’s exactly what they’re seeking,” he added. “In many cases, that’s exactly what they seek, even after death.”

Rainwater says that he must always be aware of his surroundings as a public figure.
