There are so many things to love about Bernese Mountain dogs. These gentle giants are loyal, caring, and patient with children. Their thick coat makes them ideal for colder climates, and their hardworking nature and large size make them perfect companion animals for farms.

Despite their many virtues, these big dogs are not known for their athletic prowess. But that’s part of their charm. In a video from July 9, you can see this good boy giving his all, but his lack of coordination leads to an epic fail that’s sure to have you in stitches.

Thankfully, being an All-Star athlete is not a requirement when you’re as handsome as Bernie (@ bigcitybernie ). I almost feel bad for laughing because I’m neither coordinated nor athletically gifted, either. In fact, if I were to chase after a ball on a dirt road with puddles, I would also likely take a spectacular spill. On the bright side, he fell gracefully and popped back up like nothing ever happened. Perhaps it isn’t that Berners aren’t athletic, but maybe they’re more well-suited for something like tumbling than they are for playing ball.

What Sports Are Best Suited for Bernese Mountain Dogs?

With their oversized, robust frames, Bernese Mountain dogs are well known for their exceptional ability to pull carts. However, according to the AKC, they are also good at agility , obedience, and herding. Their thick furry coats make them ideal for cold weather fun, and they are always happy to accompany their humans when hiking, camping, or playing in the snow. So, while they may not be experts at fetching a ball, their versatility in various activities is impressive.

People threw their support behind this athlete in training. One person responded, “Oh, Bernie! That’s what happens when the caboose catches up with the front! We’ve all been there!” LOL, that’s for sure, especially if you’ve ever had a few too many cocktails. Viewer @pennykellum shared, “Aww. Bernie. It happens! At least you weren’t in front of a Chipotle restaurant, and no one came out to help, lol, like this hooman.” Good point! There’s nothing worse than having a moment like this in front of an audience. Viewer @its.bruceontheloose remarked, “Our Brucie boy is just as coordinated…lol. He usually runs right past the ball and into the fence.” Everyone has their strengths; for this breed, ball chasing is not one of them.

Fortunately, our dogs don’t know when we share their embarrassing moments online. Otherwise, no matter how good-natured they are, we may need to start sleeping with one eye open.
