Sergio Garcia claimed his first LIV Golf win in the most improbable style on home soil in Spain at Valderrama, defeating a crestfallen Anirban Lahiri in a playoff on Sunday.

Garcia came from seven shots back in the third and final round to force a playoff, but it never should have gone that far. Lahiri, a member of Bryson DeChambeau's Crushers team, missed a putt of just 18 inches on the final hole of regulation to blow his chance to secure victory.

After shooting five-under at his homeland's iconic course, Garcia kept his cool in the playoff and claimed victory on the second extra hole, tapping in for par after India's Lahiri wilted under pressure and made a six.

Garcia himself had lost out in three playoffs since joining LIV Golf as a founding member in 2022, but he finally got over the line in his 30th event on the Saudi Arabia-backed tour. It was Garcia's first win since claiming the Sanderson Farms Championship on the PGA Tour in 2020.

Garcia's victory, which earned him a cool paycheck of $4 million – plus a quarter share of $1.5 million after his Fireballs team claimed the team title at Valderrama – was the second piece of what could become an iconic sporting day for his country.

Carlos Alcaraz earlier defeated Novak Djokovic in straight sets to lift the Wimbledon title, hours before the Spanish national soccer team faces England in Berlin in the final of Euro 2024. Garcia was delighted to play his part and deliver a home win for the passionate crowd in Andalusia.

"Without a doubt," Garcia said when asked if it was one of the best wins of his career. "Alcaraz won today, hopefully Spain wins tonight. It would be unbelievable.

"I said to my coach I'm going to shoot five-under and see what happens. I played well, I played well in the playoff and I'm so happy.

"[The fans] were unbelievable all week and to have my kids and my wife and my parents here, it's a dream come true."

Lahiri, who also suffered playoff pain earlier this month when he missed out on a place at next week's Open Championship in final qualifying to LIV Golf rival Abraham Ancer, not only blew the chance for his first win on the breakaway circuit but also missed out on almost $2 million in prize money. Instead of taking home the $4 million top prize, he banked $2.25 million for second place.
