Evacuation order issued as SLO County fire burns 12,000 acres

The Hurricane Fire on the eastern edge of San Luis Obispo County burned more than 12,000 acres and prompted an evacuation order in Kern County.

The fire started Saturday morning on Hurricane Road northeast of Elkhorn Road in the Carrizo Plain National Monument, according to an update from the Watch Duty app.

On Saturday night, the fire crossed into Kern County, and an evacuation order was issued for the Mocal Road community, according to Kern County Fire.

By Monday morning, the fire had burned 12,703 acres, according to Cal Fire SLO. The number was reduced from the 20,000 acres reported earlier in the day after more accurate mapping was completed.

The fire was 75% contained.

Firefighters have been investigating the wildland fire, Cal Fire San Luis Obispo said in a post on X at 8:22 a.m. Sunday morning.

In another updated post around 8:40 a.m. Sunday morning, Cal Fire said the fire was 10% contained.
