Princess Kate stepped out to continue a Wimbledon tradition this afternoon by presenting Carlos Alcaraz with the famed Challenge Cup.

Kate made a rare public appearance today (July 14) to watch the men’s singles finals. The Princess of Wales is the standing patron of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, and as such, she regularly awards athletes their trophies.

This afternoon, Carlos Alcaraz defeated Novak Djokovic 6-2 6-2 7-6(4). Following the final match, Princess Kate stood on Centre Court to shake the players’ hands, share some congratulatory words, and hand them their prizes.

The beloved princess was all smiles as she talked to the players and gracefully walked to the side to let them have their moment in the spotlight.

Crowd Gives Princess Kate A Standing Ovation As She Arrives At Wimbledon Stadium

When Kate arrived at the stadium earlier today, she was met with a moving standing ovation. The entire crowd stood as she walked to her seat inside the Royal Box. She smiled at the warm welcome and waved while her fans roared. Princess Charlotte sat and proudly watched her mother shine.

“When [Kate] usually comes in, she walks down the steps and into her seat,” photographer Karwai Tang shared with People . “She doesn’t normally stand and wave. But she stood for a while and took it all in. For her to acknowledge it and take in the applause was special.”

Wimbledon was Kate’s second official royal apperance since her cancer diagnosis. HRH has been battling an undisclosed form of cancer since January when doctors discovered the disease during an unrelated abdominal surgery. Kate and her husband, Prince William , kept her condition under wraps for several months as they processed it with her three children, Prince George, 10, Prince Louis, 6, and Princess Charlotte, 9.

Kate has been undergoing “preventative chemotherapy” and will not fully return to her royal duties until her doctors determine that she is well enough.
