WILDFIRE: New ‘Speirs Fire’ burning near Flaming Gorge Reservoir

DAGGETT COUNTY, Utah ( ABC4 ) — A new wildfire dubbed the “Speirs Fire” has kicked up in Daggett County, according to Utah Fire Info.

Located near the Flaming Gorge Reservoir in the Ashley National Forest, the fire was estimated at 125 acres Saturday night but remained active overnight, with “additional growth in size and fire spotting,” officials said.

A total of 35 firefighters were on scene Saturday night, but additional resources are arriving Sunday, including smokejumpers and aerial crews.

The fire is reportedly burning east of Cart Creek drainage, primarily in an eastward direction.

“Weather conditions for Sunday include high temperatures and potential wind, with red flag warnings for fire potential in the area,” officials said. “Thunderstorms are predicted for the afternoon, which may increase fire activity and growth.”

There are currently no evacuations in place, and no campgrounds have been closed. However, visitors and residents in the area are asked to remain observant as the fire situation is “dynamic” and the status may change quickly depending upon fire behavior, officials said.

The Speirs Fire is currently 0% contained. New acreage estimates will be provided once known.
