Spain's Lamine Yamal added another age record to his name on Sunday when he became the youngest player to appear in a European Championship final, the day after his 17th birthday.

Yamal is close to two years younger than Renato Sanches who played in the 2016 final for Portugal at 18 years 326 days.

Yamal earlier became the youngest ever player at the Euros at 16 years 338 days in their opening match against Croatia and then also the youngest scorer at 16 years 362 days in the semi-final against France.

He has played in all Euro 2024 matches and is also younger than the late Brazil great Pelé who played in the 1958 World Cup final at 17 years 249. Pelé was also older than Yamal in his first World Cup match and goal.

The Pelé foundation has already congratulated Yamal to his achievements, expressing hope that "this is only the start of a promising journey."

Yamal made his first team club debut at Barcelona as a 15-year-old, and last year became the youngest Spain player and scorer in a 7-1 victory against Georgia, at 16 years 57 days.
